First roadsurfing trip – Lago di Garda

We rented a VW T6 California Ocean Bulli autumn 2018 in Munich. K1 was about 6 months old and we wanted to know, if making holiday in a van would be something for all of us.

Our vacation did not start well. We all fetched a cold – one after the other. We rented the van on Saturday and had to wait until Wednesday before we could start.

We decided to only drive small distances to see how well it goes. Hence our first stop was

Starnberger See, Germany

Camping Fischer

A nice campground with good facilities near the lake. Because it’s near the street to the highway, you hear cars from time to time, even some during the night.

The lake is just across the street and really beautiful. In the evening you can order fresh bread for the next day.

We had to take a short stop at Penzberg for the doc. Luckily she could reassure me – the pretty new on the job dad – that it was just a cold and that there was no reason for turning back.

Kalterer See, Italy

Camping St. Josef

22,20 €/ night (1 van, 2 adults)

This spot was pretty tight, but the staff friendly and they had a nice restaurant. Nothing fancy, but good basic food. In the morning we got fresh bread.

We made a nice walk around the lake. The scenery was nice, the sun warm and even the bus loads of elderly tourists didn’t get far from the parking lot, so that we walked pretty much on our own.

Lago Del Garda, Malcesine, Italy

Camping Lombardi

25,60 €/night (1van, 2 adults)

A small, shady campground away from the big street.

Tip

Not far away from the campground was the paraglider landing site. It was quite cool to see them in their landing attempts, given that it seemed to be a small stretch of land. The really nice part was however that there is a chilled bar next to it, where we ordered some drinks and chilled in big beach cousins.

Lago Del Garda, Bardolino. Italy

Camping Europa

32,20 € night (1 van, 2 adults)

The campground had some trees and was directly at the lake, but on the other side was the street. We had a good sleep and during the week, there wasn’t much traffic – but main season and weekends …

The ferry to Limone

We got the last morning ferry of the season to the other side of the lake. It was k1s first ferry ride ever and he had a lot of fun. Limone itself is a fascinating little village, but with loads of tourists. Nevertheless we parked ourselves in one of the a bit overpriced restaurants and enjoyed some food under palms with a view on the lake.

Lago di Garda, Sermione, Italy

was our last stop. We got there in the afternoon. Parked not far away from the gate and strolled through the narrow alleys. Although shoulder season it was quiet packed. I can’t imagine going there during main season. Still it was nice and we made pause in one of the cafes.

The way back home

We wanted to try a night drive, to see if that would work better than the small segmented way to Lago Del Garda.

We needed 6 hrs from Sermione to the campground near the Starnberger See. We made a stop for coffee at the Plessi Museum and rest area at the Brenner Pass which is located near the former customs area between Austria and Italy and is by the way an innovative example of architecture. Our 2nd stop was for some gasoline and the third for new diapers and some food for k1 in Innsbruck. Everything went smoothly.

Starnberger See, Germany

End of the season was here near as well.

From there the way to Munich was only a hop. Returning the Bulli was easy and fast.

The bottom line

We will definitely rent a Bulli for our parental leave in 2019!

Safe travels!
