California meets Bavaria – the big lake tour 2020

COVID-19 cancelled our travel plans for this year. We had planned to drive to Lithuania and attend a wedding of friends of ours, but …

So, change of plans. After spending a week in Warnemünde at the Baltic Sea – friends of ours have a small apartment there – we had to go for an appointment in south Bavaria. What better way to do it as to as some days and do it in a California Ocean?!

We picked our van from the rental station. This time it was white – better than last times grey. We drove home and packed it in record time. It helps, when you have some practice. The feature that I was most enthusiastic about was the prepared holes for the isofix (child’s safety seat anchorage). With these it was installed in an instant.

The only tricky part of this journey was that we only could book one campground for one single night in advance. All the rest were fully booked – not to mention that only the one were we got a spot had an online booking tool. The others still relied on telephone and email …

Altmühlsee in the evening

Our first hopp was to the Altmühlsee in Franconia. It’s a nice big lake. A lot of Stand Up Paddlers. The only malus are the blue-green algae in some parts of the lake.

Reisemobilstellplatz Altmühlsee. A night and a day for 14 € (2 adults/child/van).

Nightfall at Altmühlsee

We decided not to take the Autobahn to get to our next goal. Good choice! It was a slower but very relaxed ride into the south of Bavaria. We got through small & pittoresk villages with white church towers and colourful tiled roofs. The Bavarian country side at its finest.

We got lucky an got one of the last places at Campingplatz Aichalehof at the Staffelsee unfortunately only for one night.

The water was clean and quiet warm. K1 had fun in the water and even met a girl of his age.

Everybody at the campground was wearing a mask and paid attention to the rules, which made everything quiet relaxed.

The next day we drove to the Walchensee. Because it was about 30 degrees we decided to make a short and shady mountain hike first.

The Jochberg made a short test with us. We only could get to the first viewpoint at 450 altitude meters. It was to hot to carry K1 higher. Quickly we descended and looked for a swimming spot at the Walchensee. Surprise! The Walchensee was warm – far too warm for a mountain lake like this.

We spend the night at the Nachtparkplatz near Einsiedl at the south end of the lake. Not really nice with a Dixie-Klo (portable toilet) – but cheap: 8€.

Walchensee sun down

The next day we got up early to get a parking spot for the Bulli directly at the lake. Friends of us joined us for breakfast. We had a nice day at the lake and drove in the evening to the Schliersee.

We spend the night at a public parking lot near a campsite. At 22 o’clock police drove by, but didn’t care.

In the Morning we drove to Café Winklstüberl in Fischbachau and had breakfast and a yummy peace of cake. The cakes make this place famous. Big chunks. In a way it the equivalent to Heart Attack Burgers – only with cakes ;-). They have a small playground with a slide so K1 was happy as well.

We visited Fischbachau and made later a short hike to the Almbad Silberghaus.

In the evening we came back to the Camping Schliersee. We got a nice spot in second row at the lake. It started raining and it didn’t stop.

Schliersee in the Morning

In the Morning I took a dive in the Schliersee. Funny – the rain was cooler than the lake. I was alone in the water. Fog and clouds hang deep in the mountains. It was fantastic!

We packed and drove to visit some friends near Munich. That was our last stop at our lake tour.

We can only recommend the lakes in Bavaria!

Cheers and Glück auf! Drive safely!
