Munich

We are no natives as you may know, but we live in this town since 2008. Over time we got to know the city and we want to give you some “insider” tips. We recommend these to our friends and relatives and we personally like these places a lot.

Why Munich?
They say that Munich is the nothernmost city of Italy, and a million people village – and it’s true.

Things to see and do (in alphabetical order)

ASAM  CHURCH
Sendlinger Straße 32
If you want to see at least one church from the inside, make it this one. The style is late Baroque, wonderfully opulent.

CINEMA
Nymphenburger Str. 31,
The “film programming is directed at the discerning moviegoer, with a mix of new-release blockbusters, specialty and art house films, and special events such as live transmissions from the most renowned opera houses of the world.” Or as we see it, the no.1 cinema in Munich.

ENGLISCHER GARTEN – southern part
If you see someone in the middle of the city carrying a surfboard an heading in the direction of the south end of the “Englischer Garten” you should follow this person, because he or she will probably surf the “Eisbach”. All year round you will find surfers that ride this natural inner city wave. I personally can watch them for hours.  It’s for free and it’s fun. Please note, that surfing there is only for really, really good surfers.

Like me, you probably should better have a dip in the “Eisbach”. The ice river deserves it’s name. It is really cold but in summer the dip is really refreshing. Start a few meters behind “The wave”. The current is quiet strong, so you don’t have to do much, but you are definetly not able to swim back – not even a few meters! The current takes you and makes a right turn, you pass under two bridges – mind your head. After a short while there comes your chance to get out of the river. It’s on the left side infront of a small river barrage. Swim left and when you see the opening in the concrete swim in it’s direction. Hurra, you have reached the ladder. Now you can either choose to walk back, or take the nearby tram No. 18, and do it all over again!

Lederhosentraining
Every Monday at 1900 you can take part in an hour of sweaty outdoor workout for the whole body. It is really tuff, but it is fun and it is for free! The meeting point is at the wave form there you jog into the park with the group.

Should you be hungry and like some organic food, have a look for the Milch Häusl. It’s located on the western side of the park.

ENGLISCHER GARTEN – northern part
It is quieter and less crowded. If you are looking for some peace, you will find your spot there. There is a nice “Biergarten” called Hirschau and on sunday’s they have a jazz band playing.

TOLLWOOD FESTIVAL
Food from around the globe, good music (for free), even very good concerts (ticket needed), and a lot useful/useless stuff to buy are the ingredients for this very popular festival with a very relaxed atmosphere.
– In summer you find it around July near the Olympic Stadium in the Olympic Park
– In winter around December it’s at the Theresienwiese.

Places to eat & drink

Bars & Cafés

GARTENSALON
Türkenstraße 90, 80799 München
It’s such a lovely place for breakfast. Hidden in the “Amalienpassage” you can enjoy the sun on warm days outside. Inside it is lovely decorated and the staff is very friendly. The menu is down to earth. Try the “Tomatenbrot”, it’s my favorite.

ZUM JENNERWEIN
Belgradstraße 27, 80796 München
Our favorite bar. You can come as you are, the interrior has’nt changed since the golden days of punk rock, the Jägermeister is cheap and the atmosphere is very relaxed.

COOPERATIVA
Jahnstraße. 35, 80469 München
Fresh mediterranean food with a bavarina vibe. No credit cards!

STADION AN DER SCHLEISSHEIMERSTRASSE
Schleißheimerstraße 82, 80797 München
If you want to experience German football (soccer) culture this is the place to be. The “Stadion” welcomes all fans no matter which club they are fan of!
Watching a game, drinking German beer, eating a Currywurst in the midst of all the fans enjoying the game day, is a great experience. All this happens in a relaxed peaceful atmosphere with tons of football memorabilia around you.
Check out the schedule and make sure to have a reservation on game days with a derby.

Getting around

Public transport in Munich is so good that you really don’t need a car. As a matter of fact, we don’t own a car ourselves.
There are special tickets for tourists. For several days and even for more than 2 people.
On most of the ticket machines you can change the language to English.
After 21 o’clock you have to onboard buses at the front, so that the diver can see your ticket.

Around the city

LAKES & MOUNTAINS
are only approx. 40 minutes away from the city center if you go by S-Bahn.

HIKING & MOUNTAINEERING
If you are interested in hiking and mountaineering and understand German alpenverein.de is the site for information. If you need an English speaking person or want personal assistance the DAV has two offices in Munich as well. You find the addresses at the above mentioned website.

WINTERSPORTS
In the winter you can board a bus at the ZOB (central bus station) and have a great day at one of the many ski resorts in the Alps. The drive – depending on where you go – is approx. 2 hours – so most of the trips leave around 6 am – which is hard. The price (approx.70€) includes the bus ride, a breakfast snack and the ski ticket. At the ski resort you can lend skis and boots, often with a discount. Good providers are: skibusmuenchen.de & powertagesfahrten.com
Getting up early is totally worth it!!!
