Hong Kong

“Flow like water!” – Bruce Lee
Think of Hong Kong as vertical, not horizontal! – Carson

We arrived by express train from Guangzhou.

Hotel Holland Guest House, Kowloon, Chungking Mansion

The mansion was basically a hawker temple. A hustling and bustling of countless different nationalities. But once we’ve passed the seller at the entrance we had a tiny, tiny room on the 13th floor, that – surprisingly – had everything we needed.

Tip
Wikipedia has some interesting facts about the mansion. A sociologist wrote a book about it and a famous Hong Kong director chose it as set for his movie.

1st day

It rained more or less the whole afternoon and evening, so we strolled only near the harbor and in some shopping malls.

Tip
The “light show” in the evening was nothing stunning. So no need to extra go there and see it.

2nd day

Electronics
Wan Chai Computer Centre

On two floors we saw a lot of stuff. They sold Kindle, but it was far more expensive than at home. We saw only a few Apple devices, mainly Samsung and alike.

Apple Store @ IFC Mall
Great store with a good view uponthe skyline of Hong Kong Island. The prices, however, were only slightly better than in Europe.
Tip

Don’t buy anything on Nathan Road, because you can’t be sure that it is the “right” thing!

Carson
In the evening we met with Carson. We already had spent an interesting evening together with him and his friends on Olkhon Island in Russia.

In Hong Kong he went with us to the Sheung Wan district. In a local and cheap restaurant we ate the “1000 year old” egg. The taste was quiet “disappointing” – it just tasted like a normal boiled egg.

From here we walked to…
…Mrs. Pound

It had a hidden entrance and from outside looked like a store for stamps. But behind this disguise was a cool and surprisingly casual cocktail bar with modern style and a charming little 50s touch. The service is quick and friendly and the bartender can prepare you whatever cocktail you like! ;o)
After the visit to the bar we walked a little more through Sheung Wan district. At many walls we saw quiet cool street art. A lot of temples are hidden in these streets and buildings. Later tram and ferry brought us back home to Kowloon.

3rd day
It rained cats and dogs, so we opted for the short walk and had breakfast at Starbucks on the opposite side of the mansion.

Hong Kong Heritage Museum

We saw a good exhibition about the history of Hong Kong. It showed the interesting abundance between Guangzhou and Hong Kong, especially The New Territories.
“Bruce Lee: Kung Fu, Art & Life” was another very interesting exhibition, as he was a true local hero.

Tip
Museum admission is free on Wednesdays!

Cinema @ IFC Mall
We watched Jurassic World in 3D. Quiet fun as we weren’t in a cinema for a long time now, but the movie itself was nothing to remember!

Tip
We paid with our Octopus Card here and due to this got a nice discount.

4th day

Australia Dairy Company
A tip from Carson, our friend from Hong Kong, for a real local breakfast. We made an early start, because we heard that the queue in the morning could be long. As we arrived it was closed – due to Thursday?! Immediately the rain started poring… We decided to return to the breakfast caterer of our choice.

The middle of the day we spend on Hong Kong Island strolling around, looking into some art galleries and at street art.
In the evening we met again with Carson. This time Angela, his friend, joined us and together we went by taxi to the far northwest of Kowloon. The ride itself already was worth the trip. We stopped in what Carson called “workers district”. The restaurant was a local down to earth place, where we were the first Germans, even foreigners, ever :-) We ate steamed fish with a sauce of beans and vinegar. Some intestines of a pig, local sausage and tofu with bean curd sauce, fried oyster, salty peanuts, vegetables, sour cabbage and of course a soup with rice, vegetables and eal. Yummy! On the way out Claudia gave the owner a big smile and thumps up, which brought a big smile on his face too :-)
Near Temple Street we went to another place to have a typical Hong Kong desert. Carson ordered four cold, sweet soups. The sweetness was not very strong but the cold soups – among others with sea wheat, bean curt skin, sesame, sticky rice, red and green beans – were very refreshing in the summer heat.

5th day

Australia Dairy Company (2nd try)
This time we made it! The queue was quiet long but they had an efficient way on placing the people at the tables, so that we didn’t wait long. On a little piece of paper Carson had wrote us down what we should order – a breakfast set. That made the waiter smile. Shortly after the food already arrived at the table. Noodles with meat stripes in a broth and scrambled eggs with two big slices of toasted bread. As we finished the dishes we got hot milk coffee. Great! And for a good price!

After breakfast we said goodbye to the mansion and headed for the airport.

Tip
The bus A21 to the airport has many stops in Kowloon, costs only 32 HKD, can be paid by Octopus Card and takes only about an hour. Good choice!

At the airport we returned the Octopus Card and got our deposit and the prepaid amount back.

Hong Kong – Singapore
Jetstar Asia, Economy, 4 hrs

It was a calm and nice flight with this Airbus 320. Enough space for our legs, but no entertainment system. Still quiet very good for a low cost carrier.

Thank you for reading!

Safe travels
